On the 3th July you sent to Creech Jones a

letter, which I now return, from

Sub-Inspector &.J. Stephens, of the Hong Kong Police Force, enclosing a cory of a petition addressed to the Secretary of State, though the Governor, about the position and terms of service of members of United Kingdom Folice Forces who were recruited for service in the liong Kong Police.

The petition has not yot boca received officially from the Governor, and until we receive it in this way, together with his observations on it, we are not in a position to comment on it in detail. I can, however, say that as a result of the urgent need of recruitment of policemen frum United Mapon Police Forces for service in Hong Kong during the period immediately prior to the re-occupation of the Colony, some details of the pensionable” status of tnese men, of whom Stepuens são vid, veře

unfortunately not fully borne in mind with the result that a good deal of sortlag out las had to be done. I think however that as a result of further

correspondence with the Governor tule aspect of the matter is being satisfactorily resolved, Reviste

letters of appointment are being (or by uwe probably have been) issued to these officers, on the basis that there are three categories of appointment, nasely

(a) those officers who were recruited from the

Metropolitan police;
